RRB ALP Notification 2023: Selection Procedure

The recruitment process will consist of the following stages:

  • First Stage CBT (CBT-1)
    • CBT-1 serves as a screening exam to shortlist eligible candidates for CBT-2.
    • Shortlisting is based on normalised marks and merit obtained in CBT-1.
    • Marks from CBT-1 are not considered in the preparation of the final panel.
    • For candidates of OBC, SC, or ST who meet relaxed age standards and are shortlisted for CBT-2, they maintain their status as candidates from their respective reserved communities in all subsequent stages of the recruitment process.

  • Second Stage CBT (CBT-2)
    • Shortlisting for CBT-2 is conducted RRB-wise and community-wise. It is based on the normalised marks and merit achieved in CBT-1.
    • The total number of candidates shortlisted for CBT-2 is limited to 15 times the number of vacancies notified against each RRB. Railways retain the right to adjust this limit, either increasing or decreasing, to ensure a sufficient pool of candidates for the specified post.
    • The final panels for Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) will be exclusively based on the marks and merit obtained in CBT-2 and CBAT (Computer-Based Aptitude Test).

  • Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT)
    • Shortlisting for the Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) is based on candidates achieving marks in Part A of CBT-2.
    • The number of shortlisted candidates is eight times the number of vacancies for each community or category (UR, OBC, SC, ST, and EWS), following reservation rules and qualifying in Part B of CBT-2.
    • Shortlisted candidates must present their vision certificate in the specified format (Annexure VI) during CBAT; failure to do so will result in disqualification.
    • Each section of CBAT must be cleared separately, and the test is conducted in English and Hindi without negative marking.
    • Detailed information about CBAT can be found on the RDSO website link 👉 Click here
    • To qualify for CBAT, candidates, regardless of community, need a minimum T-score of 42 marks in each test battery.
    • The merit list is based on candidates qualifying for CBAT, with 70% weight given to Part A of CBT-2 marks and 30% to CBAT scores.

  • Document Verification (DV)
    • Shortlisting for Document Verification is based on candidates’ marks and merit in Part-A of CBT-2, qualification in Part-B of CBT-2, and scores in CBAT.
    • The number of shortlisted candidates equals the number of vacancies.
    • In the event of candidates securing equal marks, age becomes the determining factor for merit position, with the older candidate given higher merit.
    • RRBs recommend names of empaneled candidates to the respective Railway Zone, and appointment offers are issued solely by the concerned Railway Zones.
    • If there is a shortfall in empanelment or other unforeseen circumstances, RRBs have the right to use candidates down on the merit list based on merit and their preferences.
    • However, this does not guarantee any vested right for such candidates to be considered for appointment.

  • Medical Examination (ME)
    • Selected candidates need to pass a medical fitness test by the Railway Administration and undergo final verification of all necessary documents and background checks on their character and antecedents.
